In recent times the Nigerian music has becomes a force to reckon with both in the Western World and most strongly in African. The Nigerian Music which comprises of talented artist, with different genre, some which are known worldwide.

This article is based on a key study of Nigerians key artist which have made great contributions to the Nigerian Music Industry with great impact both globally, the likes of Naija artist has taken a new turn but before we takes a leap to the current happenings let revisit the past and know how it all started.


Old School

In Nigeria with the largest ethnic group are Igbo, Hausa and the Yoruba. In time past music (Traditional) are perform to mark a ritual such as weddings or funeral and not to achieve artist goals. Children and Elders play instrument such as un-pitched raft zither made from cornstalks and drums made from tin cans, a pipe made from a pawpaw stem, jaw harp made from sorghum stalks, for amusement purposes. Solo performance is otherwise rare.


PALM-WINE:      The earliest styles of Nigerian music were Palm-wine music and highlife which spread in the 1920s amongst Nigeria and nearby country with the famous Baba Tunde King who actually coined the word Juju a style of music he helped to create. This urban style was frequently played in bars to accompany drinking (Palm Wine became the basis of Juju).

Famous Palm-Wine Music artist include Baba Tunde King who coined the name Juju, Tunde Nightingals and speedy Araba. This artist alongside king established the core of the style which was called Juju.

APALA:     A style of vocal and percussive muslin Yoruba music. It emerge in the late 1930s as a means of rousing worshippers after fasting of Ramadam the music required two to three talking drums (Omele), a rattle, thumbs piano (agidigbo) and a bell (agogo) with the famous Haruna Ishola was Apala performer.


Juju early pioneers are Agoge Daniel, Irewole Dange & Blind Ministrel Kokoro.

After the introduction of new instrument and techniques from united state and Europe including electric instrument Rock N Roll, soul and later funk became viral in Nigeria and element of this genres were added to juju by artist such as IK Dairo while the high life has seen slowly gain popularity among Igbo people.

AFRO BEAT:      Is a style most closely associated with Nigeria-afro beat recording is prominent in part of the world music category found throughout the developed world. It’s the combination of American funk music with element of highlife, jazz and other West African music styles.

The popular performer, indeed the most famous Nigerian in history ( Fela Kuti).

Then the Juji

Afro-Juju & Waka.

Don Jazzy

Micheal Coulins Ajareh popularly known by his stage name Don jazzy a multi award winning Nigeria record producer, singer-song writer, musician CEO Marvin records and a former CEO Mo Hits Records.

His first ever credit in a production work was in 2004 on Tongolo for a Nigerian singer D’banj. D’banj first studio album titled No Long Thin was produced by Don Jazzy which he was released in 2005

The likes of Nigeria music took the producer singer-songwriter, musician Don Jazzy on a collaboration with Jay Z & Kenye west on a production of lift Off feature Beyonce on the album watch the throne, released on 8 august 2011.

He has also produce tracks for well known Nigerian artist too, which include: Dr sid, Wande Coal, Emeka Infiniti, D prince, Darey, Naeto c, Olakunle Excel et Zanga, Tiwa Savage and more.

The 33years old has been honored with several awards and nominations which include: the producer of the year for the song Dorobucci (The Headies Award 2014), Nigeria Entertainment Awards (NEA) 2007 Music producer of the year, he recently received a special recognition award- the city people entertainment awards 2015.
















David Adedeji Adeleke well known by his stage Name Davido, the America born Nigeria recording artist, co-owner of HKN music and a record producer. His singles “Dami Duro” was well received throughout Nigeria. Davido has sign an endorsement deal with MTN Nigeria on October 23,2013, partnered with Guinness for the Guinness world of more concert in his career pursuit Davido has won number of Awards- 2012 best newcomer Awards (Kora Awards),BET Awards-best international Act Africa, Ben TV Awards music Video of the Year,2011 Promising Youth artist & song of the year-Dynamix all youth Awards, 2014 African Music Magazine Award-Best Male West Africa and artist of the Year, MTV Africa Music Awards- Best Male and artist of the Year 2014.

Davido has an estimate of 29 awards and 74 nominations.



Davido reveals his plans to collaborate with Mi Casa, Lora Rae, Sarkodie, Diamond Plantinumz and Tiwa Savage in an interview with Newage Newspaper on a song for DSTV Africa rising Campaign  in June 2014,he also feature south Africa duo Mafikizolo in his upcoming album fifth single “Tchelete” on April 30 2014 which was produced by Oskido and Shizzi further more

He collaborated with American rapper Rick Rock and Meek Mills in June 2015, Davido dropped his long awaited collaboration with Meek Mills titled “Fans MI”.




Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun burn 16, July 1990 better know by his stage Name wizkid, is a Nigerian Recording artist songwriter and a performer. He started his music career at age 11 in Lagos, releasing a collaborative album with glorious five in 2001. He became famous in 2010 with the release of the song titled “ Halla at your boy” from his debut studio album Superstar in 2011 his second all came in 2014 a self titled album Ayo.

His work and contribution to the Nigeria music industry has earned his several achievements which include- BET Awards, a Mobo Award, five Headies Awards, Channel O Music Video Awards, four Nigeria Entertainment Awards ,he has been nominated three time at the Europe Music Awards, ranked 5th by Forbes and Channel O 2013 list of the top Richest/Bankable African artist.

In February 2014 Wizkid became the first ever Nigerian to have over 1million followers on Twitter.

In July 2015 on recording and releasing the music “Ojuelegba” the official remix for the song feature Drake and Skepta, it premiered on OVO Sound Radio. The likes of Wizkid has taken another turn in a recent collaboration with Drake and Kyla on a song titled “One Dance”  which made Wizkid the first Nigerian artist to emerge at Number Spot on Hot 100 Billboard Chart in May 12 2016..

Prior to Wizkid and Drake collaborations,Wizkid has work with Angel (UK Singer)  in 2013 on a song Blown Away, R Kelly in new album the Buffet on a song thank you and in October 2014 Wizkid announced that  he was working on a new album during his visit to London and he reveals his collaborative song with Chris Brown “African Bad Girl” and said it would be head single off the upcoming album. in April 2014 both Wizkid and Chris Brown performed the song together in Durbin & South Africa.

Back to Africa Wizkid has feature a lot of Nigerian artist to mention a few outside his country Nigeria which include

R2Bees (Slow down)

Uhuru and Radio and Weasel(Don’t cry).

He is the current artist of the year Ghana Music Awards (GMA).

Currently Wizkid will be the Headliner  of one of United Kingdom’s biggest summer music festivals; Wireless 201, alongside Calvin Harris, Bryson Tiller, Miguel, Lady Leshur, 1975, Vic Mensa, Kwabs, The Disciples and a couple other acts billed to perform on the music festival’s 8th of July opening date .

This will be Wizkid’s first appearance at the Wireless Festival as a headliner since he was invited on stage by UK singer, Angel in 2013 as a featured artiste on Blown Away, a single they both collaborated on in the same year.

Other artistes billed to perform over the weekend include J.Cole, Big Sean, Kygo, Craig Davids, Krept and Konan, Fergie, Jess Glynne, Kehlani, Jerimih, Young Thug, Ty Dollar $ign amongst others.

Innocen ujah idibia also known as 2face (2baba) he is a singer-songwriter, record producer and entrepreneur. He is one of the most popular & successful Nigeria afro pop artist in Africa. 2baba has received likes from the Western World from his collaboration with T-pain, Sony one Africa one8 project alongside seven other musicians across Africa recording a single with R-Kelly & Prince Lee titled “Hands Across the world”, 2baba is the first non Liberian to become an honorary member of the Liberian music society due to his contribution to the growth of music in Africa. He has received several collaboration all over the globe, in NYC 2014 2face and heavy weight America rapper jay z met.


His effort toward the growth of music in Africa has been rewarded by several awards both in Nigeria and Europe which include one MTV Europe Awards, one World Music Awards, five Headies  award, four Channel O Music Video Awards, BET Awards, four MTV Africa Music Awards and several nominations.

2bab is currently the CEO of Hypertek Entertainment after leaving the Music label Kennis music.

2baba is a role model to many Entertainers in Nigeria Music Industry.

Tiwa savage

Tiwatope Savage Balogun is her full name popularly known as Tiwa Savage, she is a recording artist, singer-song-writer, performer and actress. She is currently sign to Sony/Atv music publishing and Mavins records.

The likes and pursuit of her career, Tiwa Savage was a co-writer of the track Collard Green & Cornbread  “Fantasia Barrind’s” Grammy nominated album. The song writer also featured on Solar Plexus, a compilation album that was released a day after the establishment of Mavins records.

Tiwa savage  “Once upon a Time” Album in 2010, she networked with Barklee Alumni Keith Harris, Derek Pate, Scott Coleman, Rader Ellis and Darlen Dorsey while attending the aforementioned music school.

She has feature series of Nigerian artist which include Flavour (oyi remix) in 2012,Waje, Praiz, Timi Dakolo, Pamela Egoh on Ovation Red Carol Theme song “Higer”, Reekado Banks turn it up, Dr Sid, Dorobucci, Korede Bello, Dija and Patoranking “Girli O remix”.

Tiwa Savage Glory didn’t just come by chance, when she stepped into the Nigerian Music industry she received a lot of ridicule and hostility from people who believed she won’t make it, people told her she wouldn’t be welcome as a female singer. But today Tiwa Savage is a role model for many female upcoming singers.
